Prof (Dr.) Arun Sharma is an eminent figure in the field of forensic science and commenced his professional journey after he earned his master degree in forensic science in 1984 from Punjabi University, Patiala. And then was awarded National Fellowship by the Bureau Police Research and Development, MHA GOI and pursued research work leading to award of PhD degree at National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Science in Delhi and Punjab University Chandigarh.
Prof (Dr.) Sharma's prowess as a young scientist was internationally acknowledged when he presented his groundbreaking research findings at the Triennial 11th meeting of International Association of Forensic Science held in Vancouver, BC, Canada under the Young Scientist Scheme from Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India in 1987 and then a post-doctoral fellowship by CSIR, which further solidified his position as a prominent academic and researcher.
In addition to his academic achievements, Prof (Dr.) Sharma demonstrated his commitment to public service by achieving top ranks in both the Union Public Service Commission New Delhi (UPSC) and Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (HPPSC) examinations. His passion for his home state led him to join the State Forensic Science Laboratory, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, where he embarked on a journey that would eventually see him rise to the prestigious position of Director and Head of the Department, a role he held from 2012 to 2021.
His commitment to advancing the field extends to his membership in the Scientific Working Group of the Asian Forensic Sciences Network since 2018 in the field of Crime Scene Investigation. Furthermore, Prof (Dr.) Sharma's influence extends beyond research and academia, he is a valuable member of the editorial board for various international journals.
In addition to his investigative work, Prof (Dr.) Sharma has played a pivotal role in ensuring the quality of forensic reports. He serves as a technical assessor to the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) in the field of biological sciences and crime scene management. His meticulous audits of Central and State Forensic Science Laboratories (FSL) across the country have contributed to maintaining the highest standards of forensic analysis and reporting.
Prof (Dr.) Sharma's dedication to education is evident through his active involvement in academia. He serves as a member of various boards of studies, contributing to the development of syllabi for MSc and PhD programs. As an examiner for MSc and PhD research work, he plays a crucial role in nurturing the next generation of forensic scientists.
He has disseminated his expertise at different institutions such as the Police Training College, HP State Institute of Public Administration, HP State Judicial Academy, and the Training Institute of the Health Department to the officers of police, prosecution, judicial and administration. He has earned appreciation from law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, and even the French Embassy, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the field of crime scene management.
