Program Overview

Forensic dentistry (odontology) is one of the most important branches of forensic sciences that involves the enhanced expertise of the aspirants to have a better knowledge about the comprehensive application of dental science to the identification of unknown human remains and bite marks analysis, using both physical and biological dental evidence. Forensic dentists deal with a range of medico-legal problems; identification of the human remains of natural disasters, terrorist activities, and missing and unknown persons is a central activity. The important salient features of this include the identification of individuals in the living and dead, identification of criminals in cases of physical and sexual offences, disaster victim identification. The course provides to develop the skills of the dentists in the field of criminal identification with the specific reference to the dentition and cranio-facial structures. It also enhances the knowledge of dentists to acquire the skills of detection of crimes related to the physical and sexual offences related confined to dentition. The objectives are to train a candidate so as to contribute their dental knowledge to help identify victims of mass disasters, domestic violence and other tragedies. It also ensures higher competence in both general and special area of interest and prepares him/her, for a career in the specialist practice by knowledge and skills. The course also demonstrates on understanding of the complex set of factors involved in forensic examination and identification.

Eligibility Criteria

Bachelor's degree in Dentistry from the institutions approved by the Dental Council of India with at least 55% marks or equivalent for General/OBC(NCL)/EWS category candidates and 50% or equivalent for the SC/ST and PwD category candidates.
